Have you ever noticed that your PC seems to become slower and slower? The longer you use your PC and the more application you install the slower it will seem to get. The system registry contains a whole host of information which is used by your operating system to store configuration data about installed software applications, your personal preferences, every Windows setting and a whole host of other important things. However, as you install new software and uninstall old software system registry data can be left behind. This means that over time your registry will grow, and as the registry needs to be loaded into RAM during boot up and then kept in RAM whilst you are using your PC it is clear to see that the bigger your registry the less RAM you will have available to be used by applications and the operating system in general. Additionally, just like your hard drive the registry can become fragmented. In this situation registry keys (the individual data entries) for each software application or system setting are separated in the registry, for optimal performance these should be concatenated.
So how do we go about ensuring that our registry is as lightweight as possible and perfectly healthy? The simple answer to this is that we don’t, a piece of software does. Luckily there are some excellent registry cleaning tools available completely free, such as the popular RegCure. These software applications will automatically scan the registry for errors, search for any registry keys that have been left behind by uninstalled software and defrag your registry at the same time. All of this is automated, simply start the software and tell it to begin the scan. It is important that you take the backup of your registry before you do this just in case of software removes any registry entries which are required to run your current application suite.
