Top Tips for Optimising Windows Vista
Windows Vista has been criticised for being slower than windows XP on equivalent hardware, although the release of service Pack 1 by Microsoft did much to address this criticism, it still remains apparent that in many ways Windows XP is faster than Windows Vista. If you are keen to use Windows Vista and would like to find ways to speed up your PC, then these few simple tips below will help you gain maximum performance.
• Turn off Aero - Without a doubt the number one way to increase the performance of a Windows Vista-based system is turn off the resource hungry Vista Aero theme. Although the transparent glass effects and high-quality icons look pretty, they steal from the system resource pool and slow the system down considerably.
• Defragment your hard drive - Although the NTFS file system tends to perform far better than the older FAT and FAT32 offerings from Microsoft, it is still important to defragment your hard drive regularly.
• Avoid rebooting - Windows Vista incorporates an advanced caching and prefetch system, much of this prefetch data is erased on reboot. By leaving your system switched on it will slowly learn your usage habits, cache relevant data and applications and streamline its prefetch functionality.
• Uninstall unnecessary software - The more software applications you install the larger the system registry will get, do not install applications that you do not intend to use regularly. Additionally, many software applications will install some form of start-up software, usually an update utility, which will steal RAM and CPU resources from the system.
• Clean up your hard disk drive - Windows Vista creates a lot of temporary files, as well as creating system restore points which take up ever-increasing amount of hard drive space. Clean up your hard drive regularly to ensure that you have plenty of free space available.
• Check your start-up programs - Quite often you will find that there are unneeded applications being run at system boot time, disabling these will free up RAM and CPU resources produced by other applications.
Although Windows Vista demands far more in the way of available system resources to run smoothly than Windows XP, by following these tips outlined above you will be able to ensure that your PC is running Windows Vista as economically as possible, raising the level of user experience and making your system feel more responsive.

Speed up your PC - Check for Errors in the Registry
Have you ever noticed that your PC seems to become slower and slower? The longer you use your PC and the more application you install the slower it will seem to get. There is a very good reason for this, just like your own body your PC requires regular health checks, one of the main aspects of your PC operating system which needs to be maintained regularly is the system registry.
The system registry contains a whole host of information which is used by your operating system to store configuration data about installed software applications, your personal preferences, every Windows setting and a whole host of other important things. However, as you install new software and uninstall old software system registry data can be left behind. This means that over time your registry will grow, and as the registry needs to be loaded into RAM during boot up and then kept in RAM whilst you are using your PC it is clear to see that the bigger your registry the less RAM you will have available to be used by applications and the operating system in general. Additionally, just like your hard drive the registry can become fragmented. In this situation registry keys (the individual data entries) for each software application or system setting are separated in the registry, for optimal performance these should be concatenated.
So how do we go about ensuring that our registry is as lightweight as possible and perfectly healthy? The simple answer to this is that we don’t, a piece of software does. Luckily there are some excellent registry cleaning tools available completely free, such as the popular RegCure. These software applications will automatically scan the registry for errors, search for any registry keys that have been left behind by uninstalled software and defrag your registry at the same time. All of this is automated, simply start the software and tell it to begin the scan. It is important that you take the backup of your registry before you do this just in case of software removes any registry entries which are required to run your current application suite.
Maintaining a healthy registry is one of the best ways to ensure that your PC is running at peak performance. A bloated or damaged registry simply wastes resources, clean yours now and enjoy the extra speed and responsiveness of your PC.

How to Test Your PC RAM
Your PC contains two forms of memory. Firstly there is the hard drive, this can be thought of as the long term memory and will retain its content even when your PC is switched off. The second kind of memory is RAM (Random Access Memory), and this can be thought of as the short term memory, and will not retain its contents when your PC is switched off. Occasionally a RAM module will become faulty, and this will usually result in your PC crashing or some other form of strange error such as a corrupted display occurring. In this situation it is useful to be able to test your own RAM modules before you decide if they need to be replaced or not.
Fortunately there is an excellent free utility which can be used to test RAM. This utility is named memtest 86+ and is available directly for download from Microsoft. When you first run memtest 86+ it will perform a very quick test of your RAM, although this is not a deep enough test to decide if your RAM modules are faulty or not. In very few cases this short test will identify a problem, especially with more seriously damaged RAM modules, although usually you will need to perform the secondary and more exhaustive tests.
memtest 86+ will create a boot floppy or CD which can be used to test your RAM modules more exhaustively. When prompted, reboot your PC allowing it to boot from the floppy disc or the CD that memtest 86+ created. Please note, you may need to change the boot order of devices in your BIOS before your PC will boot from this media. memtest 86+ will now perform two additional tests, the first test of RAM is a slightly more in-depth test the original, and will complete fairly quickly. After this an exhaustive test will run, which will test your RAM modules repeatedly until you quit the application. It is advised that you run this test for several hours, or overnight if possible, allowing memtest 86+ to highlight any potential errors which may be intermittent.
If after several hours memtest 86+ has not found any problems with your RAM modules it is highly unlikely that is your RAM causing a problem and you should look further afield for the cause of your error. If memtest 86+ finds problems with your RAM modules you should consider replacing them immediately.

A Basic PC Troubleshooting Checklist
More and more people are beginning to learn how to fix their own PC, using the services of repair centre can be costly, especially if problem can be fixed relatively cheaply by the PC owner. Although some repairs will need to be undertaken by a qualified professional, there are whole host of smaller repairs that can be carried out by the end user. Below is a short checklist which has been designed to ensure that you are not paying for expensive repairs when you could fix the problems itself.
1. Check all cables - Although this may sound like a very basic thing to do, it is surprising just how many computer problems are caused by loose or disconnected cables. Of course, we are not speaking about just external cables such as the power cable and monitor lead; we are talking about internal cables such as hard drive ribbon cables. Always check that every cable is tight fitting and fully connected.
2. Try to isolate the problem - If you’re having problems that you feel relate to a particular system component then try to isolate the fault. This can be done by using a different monitor, trying a different keyboard or mouse, and a whole host of other possible devices that can be swapped in and out. This allows you to identify exactly which component is at fault.
3. Check your BIOS - If your problem is related to a PC which will no longer boot, then the BIOS is a great place to start your fault finding exercise. In some cases the BIOS can become corrupted, losing its settings. Try resetting the BIOS by draining the CMOS battery; this is usually facilitated by connecting a pair of jumpers on the motherboard. Consult your system board documentation for this.
4. Exploit safe mode - If your problem is related to the operating system or device drivers then you may find that you can identify the problem more easily if you boot your PC into safe mode. Safe mode is enabled by pressing F8 during the initial Windows start-up sequence, this presents the user with a menu allowing them to choose safe mode.
5. Listen to the problem - Most modern mainboards incorporate a system of error codes which are played through the system speaker. If your PC will not boot and there is no display on the screen, then often these beep codes are the only way to diagnose a problem. Consult your motherboard documentation the description of these codes.
